Kevin McGuire Returns to Lead Men's Basketball
Local basketball legend Kevin McGuire is returning to the Lancer's men's basketball program.
The Lancers have a new but familiar face at the helm of the Men's Basketball program.
Local basketball legend Kevin McGuire is returning to the program after former coach, Patrick Kabeya announced his resignation in early September.
"Losing Patrick is tough" explains Athletic Director Jim Buck. "He's done great things for this program and has developed into a well respected, highly effective coach. He's been a big part of the Lancers for a long time and we wish him nothing but the best going forward."
While replacing a coach is never easy, the Lancers are thrilled to have secured someone of Coach McGuire's expertise. A former Lancer coach with 20+ years of experience, McGuire is a tremendous addition to the program.
Having coached at nearly every level of basketball in the country, McGuire's resume includes multiple Bay of Quinte and COSSA titles plus a long list of successes with the Belleville Spirits organization. McGuire spent 5 years coaching the Lancers in the early 2000s where he was named OCAA East Division Coach of the Year. From there, he took his talents to Ontario University Athletics (OUA) with a 4-year stint as Head Coach of the Royal Military College in Kingston. Most notably, McGuire helped select Team Canada's Junior National Team and National Development Team while hosting a training camp and, on multiple occasions held guest coaching roles for additional Team Canada training sessions.
"I am extremely excited to have Kevin back as the head coach of our men's basketball program" continues Buck. "Kevin has been a winner at every stage of his basketball career, and I look forward to seeing his winning ways continue with the Lancers. His technical knowledge is second to none and his passion for the game is contagious. He's a players coach and I know our student athletes are going to love playing for him.
McGuire will begin team training immediately and is set to start exhibition play after October 15th, 2021. The Ontario College Athletic Association regular season games begin in January with a condensed season that will see the Lancers play a double round robin within their own division, plus four additional interdivisional match-ups for a total of twelve (12) regular season games.
