The Loyalist Lancers men's basketball team continued their historic postseason run on Friday, battling the powerhouse Humber Hawks in the OCAA Championship semi-final. Despite a strong opening quarter and contributions across the lineup, the Lancers win streak came to an end at the hands of the Hawks.

Securing a place in the Final Four signifies a significant step forward for the program, further highlighted by the roster's youth and the team's distinction as the only East Division representative in the tournament. The experience accumulated this weekend marks an important phase in the program's development.

Several Lancers delivered notable efforts in the semi-final:

  • Taiwo Ajose led the team with 12 points, shooting an efficient 4–8 from the field and 3–3 from the free‑throw line. 
  • Jaden Excell added 11 points, including two three-pointers, providing a spark off the bench.
  • Demetrius Empey contributed 8 points and 8 rebounds, and was named the Lancers' Player of the Game for his performance.
  • Andrew Plaschka was strong in his minutes with 6 points, 3 rebounds, and 4 assists, showing poise and versatility.

The Lancers opened the game with confidence, putting up 19 first-quarter points and knocking down early threes while competing well on the glass. As the game progressed, Humber's depth, experience and efficiency—shooting 50.6% from the field—proved difficult to counter. Still, Loyalist remained composed, shooting an impressive 87.5% from the free‑throw line and continuing to push offensively throughout the game. 

Despite the loss, this semi-final matchup is an important chapter in the Lancers' rapidly rising trajectory. Entering the tournament on a nine-game win streak, advancing to the provincial final four, and competing against the top team in the province reflects how far the program has come.

With one game left, the Lancers now turn their attention to their final challenge of the season.

Loyalist will take on the host-team St. Clair Saints in the bronze medal game on Saturday at 2:30 PM. It's a matchup that promises intensity, emotion, and an opportunity for the Lancers to leave the championship with hardware.

For a team experiencing its first taste of provincial championship basketball, the chance to compete for a medal is a testament to their resilience, growth, and belief in one another.
