Lancers Battle to Fifth-Place Finish at OCAA Women’s Rugby 7s Championships
The Loyalist Lancers women's rugby team capped off a memorable 2025 season with a fifth-place finish at the OCAA Women's Rugby 7s Provincial Championships, showcasing heart, resilience, and teamwork across three competitive matches.
The tournament began with a tough loss to the Seneca Sting, as the Lancers fell 24–19 after leading for most of the game. Loyalist came out strong, controlling possessions and dictating play early, but Seneca surged late to edge ahead in the final minutes. Faith Ayres, who was named Player of the Game, led the charge with her trademark pace and scoring touch, securing 9 points in the game.
Refusing to let the loss define their run, the Lancers bounced back in dominant fashion in the consolation semifinal, defeating the Fleming Knights 29–5. Kaydin Brooks earned Player of the Game honours with an outstanding all-around effort, contributing 2 tries to her team's victory.
In the consolation final, Loyalist maintained that momentum, defeating the Algonquin Wolves 17–5 to secure fifth place overall at Provincials. First-year standout Mayan Mackinnon was named Player of the Game, continuing her strong rookie campaign with another powerful performance.
Before the tournament kicked off, three Lancers were recognized for their exceptional seasons during the OCAA Women's Rugby 7s League Awards ceremony. Faith Ayres and Holly McMaster were named OCAA League All-Stars, while Rowynn Cochrane earned a spot on the OCAA All-Rookie Team.
As the team celebrates the season, the Lancers also bid farewell to a talented group of graduating players: Evelyn Shakell, Madi Reid, Faith Ayres, Holly McMaster, Olivia MacCauley, Allie Quinn, and Savannahlyn Lamb. Each has made a lasting impact on the program — bringing leadership, passion, and pride to the Lancer jersey. Their contributions both on and off the field have helped shape the future success of the program, and they leave behind a legacy of dedication and teamwork.
